Sad News about our Member, Evelyn Hurley

Tuesday, 15 June 2021 by Lorraine Stachurski

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Evelyn Hurley has died. Evelyn suffered a serious fall on Queen’s Birthday weekend from which she did not recover.

As many of you will know, Evelyn has been playing bridge at the Palmerston North Bridge Club for 50 years or so, and during that time has contributed a great deal to the Club, including service as President. Evelyn was an outstanding bridge player; members will have seen her name on the Club’s Honours Boards – not once but multiple times! She ranked in the top 100 players in New Zealand and was a formidable competitor (often with husband Bob) on the tournament circuit. She also mentored developing players and offered encouragement to many in their bridge careers. Most recently, Evelyn played a significant role in arranging the Club’s 75th Jubilee celebration, which was enjoyed by many current and former members.

Evelyn's service will be held on Monday 28 June at 2pm, at the Beauchamp Chapel, 167 John F Kennedy Drive.

As a mark of respect to Evelyn, and to allow those who wish to attend to do so, the Monday afternoon bridge session will be cancelled on 28 June. The Monday evening session will be held as usual.

NZBridge published a lovely tribute to Evelyn on their news page on 12 June (see here). The tribute is also available to read on the Palmerston North Bridge Club Facebook page.

Our thoughts are with Bob, and the Hurley's children Karen and Bevan. Wishing you strength, and comfort from your memories of Ev, at this very sad time.
